1991 Volkswagen Vanagon Westfalia Camper

For consignment, a 1991 Volkswagen Vanagon Westfalia Camper with a title verified 3,070 actual miles. The astonishing low miles come after the van sat in storage in Florida from 1992 to 2023. It has not run in all that time as the fuel tank was removed prior to storage. This represents an incredible opportunity for someone with the knowledge and resource to get his low mileage camper back on the road.

Exterior

This boxy time capsule is adorned in two stage Pastel White which is augmented by many exterior features including the camper hook ups, a black plastic rocker panel that visually connects the black bumpers, a complete greenhouse of tinted glass, rear intake vents, and the track for the sliding rear door. Up front, the flat faced VW wears a grille with a strong family resemblance to other VW’s of the era and their unique headlights. There’s a lower grille and below that, a chin spoiler even further down, all in contrasting black. The 14-inch wheels are in nice condition, and the tires are likely factory originals with a mid1990 date code. Up top, the plastic roof contains a storage depression with latch points, and the pop up with canvas tent which has one tear near the hinged side. Imperfections include areas of touch up and body filler, particularly around a wheel opening where a gravel guard shows cracking from age. There’s some bubbling on a rear fender and rust on the latch panel of the rear hatch including a through spot and a notable dent on the leading edge of the driver’s front fender.

Interior

Let’s start in front where gray vinyl door cards are accented by black hardware along with vent and speaker covers and both are in fine condition. The gray cloth captain chair bucket seats wear gray cloth with charcoal piping and look immaculate with the exception of a marking on the passenger side. A textured rubber like steering wheel fronts the simple instrument cluster where there are more idiot lights than actual gauges and a colorful tachometer that highlights the optimum revs in green. The center mid dash holds the A/C panel and AM/FM/Cassette player with the radio appearing slightly askew. A floor shifter and gray carpet linger below and are in good shape. In back, we first noted some drilled holes in the floor as if something was mounted on the gray, rubberized floor. The cloth bench seat is in nice shape as is the galley, cabinetry, and upper sleeping quarters. In the rear cargo area, the cloth covered pad over the engine cover that is used to convert to a bed shows some staining.

Drivetrain

Under that pad is a hatch that reveals the 2.1 liter Boxer 4 cylinder engine with Digifant fuel injection and rated at 90 horsepower. Visually, the engine looks clean but the floor around it shows surface rust spotting. A 4-speed manual transaxle would set the van in motion keeping power in back with 3.78 gearing.

Undercarriage

Much of the underside is clean but we also have a good amount of surface rust that’s developed over time. Suspension consists of coil spring front and rear with semi-trailing arms as part of the rear, independent system. Power brakes are onboard as front disc and rear drum, and the single exhaust flows through original equipment on its short trip to the outside with a right rear exit.

Drive-Ability

The van has no gas tank and is unable to be tested.

Grab a tank and your favorite VW mechanic and get your hands on this low mileage example that was built for adventure but has been in a slumber since 1992. The V-dub world awaits and so do national parks across the country. This is the grandfather of the current van based van life movement, and allows you to take some of your home with you on the road.
