We’re in a very cool era for lovers of the VW Bus, and this 1991 Volkswagen Type 2 13-Window Camper shows you exactly why

After all, we not only never got anything as distinct as this total style in the USA, but our originals are also decades older. But South America kept the vans in production much longer, and now those who go through the right channels can individually import these younger vans. That’s how you get a classic camper with a big sunroof and cool windows but a fresher all-around style.

The South American Type 2s produced some interesting versions. This has the updated engineering and styling of the second generation, but it keeps the traditional window treatment – including the wraparound rear ones – to make this one a terrific icon. In fact, there are also sorts of little details that merge the first and second generations. You see it everywhere from the air-cooled inlets to the band of waistline brightwork that runs down the side and encircles the rear. The result is something that is quite unique, but it never looks out of place within the VW ranks. The other reason why it always fits in with the vintage crowd is because it’s such a good-looking machine that it makes for pleasant company. The light blue has a nice gloss of a later professional application, and the white upper section shows off the clean body lines. And these colors intertwine nicely in details like the white bumpers and blue wheels. Plus, the roof rack, side ladder, wheel covers, and double doors all give this one a terrific vintage feeling.

Inside, the setup in the front is clean and comfy. The front has vintage-cool pieces like the VDO gauges, a dual-spoke steering wheel, and a tall shifter. And the carpeting for the front is quite plush. We especially like the upholstery. It has a fresh look and a tasteful style with beige vinyl and lighter beige piping. Plus, the side panels are done to coordinate. The rear adds even more function to the beauty. You have the same tasteful upholstery with facing bench seats, and there’s a table in-between. You also have a sink basin, extra storage, and a full set of curtains. You may want to plumb the sink or add a modern stereo, but those are the little things if you want a true wanderer. Because you can already see how everything you really want is already in place. After all, the conversion bed was recently restored, and the large sunroof can open this VW up to a starry night.

In the rear, the engine bay has a clean and color-matched style that makes it ready to show off as much as the rest of this van. Even the belts, hoses, and wires look good. So this 1600cc air-cooled powerhouse knows how to retain the VW’s hardy reputation. These Type 2s are always associated with the open road, and so it’s nice to take full control of the motor with the four-speed manual transmission. And this one was made to be a cruiser. That’s why you have upgrades like power brakes, front discs, and modern tires.
