This is a one-of-a-kind 2003 Chevrolet Astro van (originally AWD model) converted into a 4-wheel drive minimalist camper
I’ve driven this van across the US twice and throughout the Baja peninsula. If you’re looking for something like a VW westfalia, but want more reliability, cheaper parts and easier maintenance this van is a great option for all your overlanding adventures.
The Good:
- Rare GRTV pop top for extra headroom and sleeping space (no one makes these for Astros anymore)
- NP233 transfer case conversion with 2WD High, 4WD High and 4WD Low
- 2 inch lift kit installed
- Minimalist camper setup. Can all be removed down to empty van in 5 minutes. Keep it in or start your own permanent camper build. Pullout bed on bottom and pop top bed sleeps up to 4
- Tons of extras including ARB fridge, parts for a full solar power setup (solar panel, inverter, batteries), Maxtrax recovery boards, tow straps/chains, jacks and extra fluids
- Fantastic mechanical shape with meticulous service records during my ownership showing replacement gearbox, PCU, muffler, ABS pump, various sensors and regularly scheduled oil changes. No lights on the dash except the occasional ABS light
- 4.3L V6 engine with 173K miles that still runs strong
- Registered with clean title
- Meticulous record keeping during my ownership
- Zero to minimal surface rust
The Bad:
- The van has been used as an offroad camper for 20 years so the cosmetic elements are not perfect: peeling clear coat on roof and paint on side mirrors, small holes in headliner and pop-top walls, a few stains in carpet floor, missing arm rest and a/c vent, bush pinstripes, dings in the door. Again, almost entirely cosmetic.
- Front diff bushings need to be replaced
- All-terrain tires and shocks still have life in them but are getting old
